When physical life ends, only the body passes away. The soul continues its journey in the spiritual realm, where it ascends to ever-higher levels of purity and holiness. Yet, no longer in a physical body, the soul cannot perform mitzvot or good deeds. How, then, can it continue to gain new merit?
When we, the living, give tzedakah, perform a mitzvah, or do a good deed in memory of a departed parent or loved one, the merit of those deeds is credited to and elevates their soul.
